Student Driver Information

Independence High School Checkpoints Driving Course

Williamson County Schools requires that all NEW drivers attend and complete the Checkpoints Driving course PRIOR to driving on campus. The purpose of this course is to inform families/students of ways to prevent distracting behaviors while driving and reduce the risk of accidents. Driver's Permit

A Compulsory Attendance letter is required as proof of school attendance when a student applies for their driver’s permit.

If the student already has a driver’s permit that is issued in the state of Tennessee and it has not expired, they will not need this letter to take the driver’s license test or to renew a permit (the state already has a letter on file from when the student initially took their permit test).

If the student has a license or permit from another state, or their Tennessee permit is expired, they will need this letter.

Please do not make the request on the day of your appointment. Letters can not be emailed or faxed and we will not fax a letter to the Driver's License Facility.

Parking pass

You must purchase a parking pass each new school year. Students who do not have a pass will be ticketed.

Parking Pass Application:

To purchase a parking pass for the 25-26 school year, you must have a valid Driver's License and have taken the Checkpoint Training class. You only need to take the Checkpoint training once. Please only complete the application one time. A new application will need to be completed each school year. Parking Pass Application PLEASE NOTE: Parking Passes will not be available until after school starts. We will contact students when their pass is ready to pick up from Student Services.

Parking Pass Payment:

After submitting the application, the $15 payment for the pass should be paid through SchoolCashOnline. Students can pick up their passes in Student Services during school hours.

Absence

Please make sure you add our attendance office emails to your email lists: Angela Magnino and Shalonda Hodge. We are not accepting emails for absences. If your student will be absent, please choose one of following two options to report the absence: Use our new School Dismissal Application or send a paper note.

Please note: There has been an update to the WCS attendance policy. With the new policy, a significant change affecting all students is that a family note, or official documentation can be used to excuse the first five days a student is absent each semester. After five absences have been accrued each semester, additional absences for that semester will need official documentation, such as a doctor's note, to be excused.

Early Dismissal / Late Arrivals

Early Dismissals

****WE DO NOT accept early dismissal requests by email.**** We will only accept early dismissal requests via the School Dismissal Application or with a family note. Written notes should include the student’s given first and last name, time of dismissal, reason for the dismissal and a parent/guardian signature. The cut off time for early dismissal requests is 8:30am. We are not able to do any early dismissals over the phone.

Late Arrivals

Students arriving after 7:40am must report to the front office. Parents do not need to sign students in. All students will receive four Family Emergency Passes a semester when arriving during first period. After the family emergency passes are used, detentions are assigned for arriving late to school. We will not accept family notes to excuse late arrivals.
